I'm sure you are right....poetry is notoriously difficult to translate....even for the poet, himself/herself - an admission to me by some quite eminent authors...;) more…

My feeling is that the Moutonne of the first verse are real sheep and not 'white horses' and that the 'foals' of the translation are young animals and could equally be lambs, calves or kids. I did once hand it to a friend who was not only a French teacher, but was himself half French and the implication of what he said was that the language was too more…

I dared to go into my own translator - Firefox to see what comes up....Don't know any French...but append what I found...

Sea is covered with white horses in the infinity,
Clear in the clear mist
Which smells nice the young berries.

Beautiful paintings and you have done well to preserve
them and then put them up on the net.

I enjoy painting from time to time, and very occasionally produce something which is quite nice, but no I haven't any real talent. I have A level art which is not at all the same thing, and I started an art foundation course after I left school and rapidly realised that it wasn't for me. more…

This grandfather was not a Lincolnshire man: he was actually Irish although his mother was from Lancashire and my great-grandfather's work as a civil engineer took the family all over the place, so only a proportion of the pictures are of Lincolnshire. more…

I was puzzled by the last one until I read the caption; because it doesn't look like Lincolnshire at all. I've visited some of these sites, and even stayed on a campsite at Burgh Castle (Norfolk) a few years ago. more…

Thanks for those kind words. You should hear the discards - the extempore ones that never make it on to paper - the ones that a greetings card or advertising jingle would be ashamed to call brother. more…

I claim to write poetry also.
If yours is doggerel, then mine is just ramblings.
Your writings make me smile - and so much better than my own efforts.
Keep on it more…

It is amazing how attached we become to fictional characters, and how much we care.
This month's reading group choice is a long cliche ridden novel set in the 1920s - I'm engrossed nonetheless. more…

I often develop an anxiety when I'm about to get to the last page of a book - some sort of separation angst as if someone is about to die. more…

That's very accurate. Blogging gives you the chance to make friends, and yet keep danger at bay - as long as you don't cross the line between the virtual and your reality. It could be a mistake. more…

My output is minute - perhaps a couple of poems a year, excluding the terrible doggerel (most of which, thankfully, does not survive) which I write for special birthdays and anniversaries. more…

I like your poetry very much. I am envious of poets - I rarely write it myself,& then only in the disguise of the animals in my books; there have been two poems so far, one by a cat & one by a dog - not a large output more…

I know as I was in the final upper sixth. You will note that I did actually put the correct date in the introduction, but I wrote this for a competition in October 1972 and going into the complexities of "we will not give into any sad regret next June/July" seemed a bit complicated for a simple ballad form, especially when the judge had probably ne more…
